IWC have a long history of creating watches for military pilots that stretch back to the 1930’s. The Schaffhausen manufacture made watches for the Luftwaffe during WW2 and then for the RAF during the late 40’s up until the 1980’s. All of these watches had a unified design ethos that was purpose made for combat pilots; a durable steel case, large, simplified dials with highly legible markings and an oversized crown for easy operation. After years of refining, IWC released the Pilot’s series to the general public in 1994 with the Mark XII and Chronograph models. Both proved popular and were the beginnings of what is now one of the brand’s most popular series boasting over 25 variations that include chronographs, perpetual calendars, world timers and the oversized Big Pilot range. For those looking for a durable, legible watch with a rich military heritage, the IWC Pilot’s series is incredibly hard to beat.
